I am not that woman. The one who falls for her much older, extremely handsome, and totally unavailable boss.

That’s what I keep telling myself, anyway.

I’ve watched the other women in the office fawn over Gavin, who just so happens to be one of Texas’ richest and most desirable bachelors.

But I’m interested in business. Totally professional.

We would be a terrible idea. And yet ... I can't seem to make myself want to stay away, despite the whole boss thing and an age gap bigger than the Grand Canyon.

When Gavin's past slams into his present, the lines between business and personal suddenly become very hazy.

Now I have to decide what I want most: my carefully planned future or a man who offers me everything I didn't know I wanted…

Is it wrong that I love watching characters suffer when they're totally out of their element?

Mmm, maybe.

Will that stop me from enjoying their suffering?

Yeah, probably not.

And our two main leads were DEFINITELY out of their element for the majority of this book.

#lost

From awkward texting, to mini-golf struggles, to some feverish behavior paired with an unexpected sleepover (no spoilers here 🀐), to a surprise guest, to horseback-riding mishaps, and everything in between...this story was full of twists and turns!

And as with most romances, there were the usual: "oh my gosh, NO!" and "whyyyyy?" moments, but don't worry! Zoey and Gavin did get their happy ending, which felt longgggg overdue since they spent so much time trying to keep their feelings a secret from each other.

if you don't hear this gif in his voice...you're lying

All rightyyyy, here's the part of the show where Pixie shares some highlights!!!

Now, isn’t that just like my life. I panicked without my fears even materializing.

Relatableeeeee.

πŸ“–

Gavin: I have it under good authority that your boss is single.

Gavin: VERY single.

I can almost hear Thayden’s groan in my head. He would rip the phone right out of my hands and put me into lockdown for being so ridiculous. Especially if he knew that in my head, I heard that in James Bond’s voice.

I’m single.
Very single.

Note: I heard it too lollll
πŸ“–

“So? Why the freakout? It’s clear the man is into you. Are you overthinking again?”

“Maybe. It’s kind of what I do.”

Because I keep such a tight lid on my feelings and words, it’s like my brain makes up for it with an overactive thought life. Otherwise, I might explode.

Note: Oh look, it’s me

πŸ“–

I feel as though his gaze has marked me, like there is a visible path on my skin formed by his eyes. I’m glowing under his admiration. If I were a cat, I’d be purring and bumping my head into him, begging shamelessly for more.

πŸ“–

“Mind your business, boy,” she says in a mocking tone that makes me chuckle.

“Zoey is my business,” Gavin says, and I can’t help but meet his eyes over his mother’s shoulder.

There’s a look in them that makes a shiver travel from my toes up to my head, one that I hope his mother doesn’t feel. Heat flares through me, until the weight of his words sinks in. Business. Keep this to business. Yeah right!

πŸ“–

The words are so intuitive. Because that’s exactly what I’m doing right now. My worries and thoughts have taken the wheel, shutting everything else down.

It's meeeeee.

πŸ“–

“Hello, ladies,” he says, hopping up the steps. “I understand now why Gavin didn’t show up for our meeting this morning. Is there a two-for-one special I need to know about?”

The sound of Delilah smacking the smile off his face is so loud that I literally gasp. It’s like the crack of a rifle.

“Looks like your mama needs to teach you some manners,” Delilah says, in a voice so fiery that I’m shocked her sundress doesn’t go up in flames.

The man is completely undeterred, stroking the cheek she slapped as he continues to grin. “I could say the same about yours. Not that I mind.”

She goes to slap him again, but he grabs her wrist, twisting it slightly to plant a kiss on the back of her hand. Delilah goes to use her left hand, but he grabs that too.

I already love them.

πŸ“–

“Anyway, the point is that I’ve learned—am still learning—that forming your life decisions based around the opinion of someone else, even someone as important as a father, is crippling.”

Wise. Words.

πŸ“–

I decide to just watch, wishing I had a bucket of popcorn drenched in movie theater butter.

I want popcorn soooooo bad now, lol.

πŸ“–

I realize that the conversation has temporarily halted. Gavin is watching me finger comb my hair with heat in his eyes. Has he ever seen my hair down? Doubtful. Few people have.

πŸ“–

Sam: BTW how was the kiss?

Zoey: It could have woken Sleeping Beauty.

Sam: As your friend, not as Dr. Love, can I give you an extra piece of advice, just for Zoey Abramson?

Zoey: Of course.

Sam: Don’t let your head shut down your heart.

πŸ“–

“Did you see it though? Adam Driver was Kylo Ren on an Undercover Boss spoof and—”

Note: Yasssssss

πŸ“–

Ella groans. “Aren’t you supposed to go easy and let me win?”

Zoey levels Ella with a familiar look before choosing new tiles. “Nope. Losing is a great opportunity to learn. I wouldn’t want to take away your opportunities.”

πŸ“–

I smile at that, feeling the shine of tears in my eyes. I don’t bother to wipe them away, letting them roll down my face. It feels like letting go, and I need, desperately, to let go.

πŸ“–

“I can’t be you,” I say, feeling the sting of tears I wish I could shove back behind my eyes. “I’m not going to pretend that I’m not intense. Serious. Like it or not, this is me.”

“I’m not asking you to be someone else. Definitely not me. I’m a hot mess. I’d never do that, and neither should anyone else. I’m just saying that maybe you could hold things a little bit more loosely. Maybe ease up on the control a bit without losing yourself?”

πŸ“–

“Were you testing me?” I ask.
Why does my voice sound coy? We will not flirt with our boss. We will not flirt with our boss. We will not—

“Did you like it?”

As far as content goes: Most of the suggestive material/innuendos were pretty minor, but became more heated at times. No language that I can remember.  There was no on-page sex, but it was talked about/implied between different characters. I don't want to give any spoilers, but the "surprise guest" might be a trope that some readers could be bothered by (personally, it's not my favorite trope, but I could understand how it helped with certain aspects of the overall plot as well as Gavin and Zoey’s character development). Also, Zoey experiences grief from her mom's death that happened from an accident when she was in high school. This wasn't triggering for me, but it could be for others. As for the age-gap situation: In my own life, I’m very familiar with age gaps. I have relatives and friends that are/were in relationships with 10+ years between them...so I wasn’t really bothered by the age gap that Zoey and Gavin had. However, their concern about the age gap between them felt very repetitive (up until almost the very end) and that’s what made the whole age-gap thing feel “wrong.” I would describe the book as a mild "PG-13 romance movie."

I really loved the funny parts. I swooned over the tender moments. And the time spent with Gavin's family was super sweet! Andddd, of course, it was great seeing characters from the first book!! Abby and Zane were even CUTER in this one (even if they were supposed to be "that annoying couple").

I can't wait to read Delilah and Thayden's story next, followed by the rest of this cute romcom series!!

Falling for Your Best Friend's Twin: a Sweet Romantic Comedy (Love ClichΓ©s Sweet RomCom Book 1) by Emma St. Clair - Book Review

My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

There are a million and one reasons why I shouldn’t fall for my BFF’s twin...

Too bad love isn’t reasonable.

Zane is my total opposite. He dates a steady string of women who are nothing like me.

And there’s no way I would risk Zoey’s friendship over my teensy, tiny crush on her brother.

But when Zane hires me to help fix a glitch with his startup’s software, I run into two problems:

1. Someone on the inside seems to be sabotaging it.

2. Working with Zane every day sends my feelings into overdrive.

My master plan is to sniff out the rat, help Zane save the company, and get out while my heart is still intact. No biggie.

But somehow, I get roped into an investors’ spa trip. Which means spending a whole weekend with Zane and sharing a room with his date.

Kill. Me. Now.

This might serve to destroy my crush once and for all.

If it doesn’t destroy me first …

Okay, this was way too cute!! In all honesty, there were a few times when I was worried that maybe I'd end up feeling disappointed because of how excited I was to read it...and how much I like the book starting out. Once I finished it, however, I decided that I really liked it! Truly.

πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

All right, I normally don't do this, but I noticed a few reviewers who quite a bit of negative thing to say about Abby and how she handled herself/situations in the book. And since every reader is entitled to their opinion, I want to share my thoughts about Abby's behavior and personality. First off, her bullying experience in high school was absolutely horrible. Maybe the "mean girls" trope seems overused, but there are mean girls out there. Even though the book takes place years after the bullying, insecurities/fears can hit at any point. Did Abby have immature moments? Yes. Was she selfish at times? Yes. Were some of her actions more on the irrational side? Yes. But she was HUMAN. We all have those same struggles. No one is perfect. And I honestly feel like Abby relied on her sarcastic/carefree/outgoing attitude to help fight her insecurities. So, maybe she just seemed like an annoying brat to some...but I saw her as a woman who was still hurting, even though she tried her best to avoid those feelings. All that to say, I did NOT hate Abby lol.

Moving onto the romanticccccc side of the book (which, is like my favorite part, of course), Zane and Abby were opposites in almost every way...and when the more-reserved character falls for the fun-loving character, I just can't help myself! I swoon like there's no tomorrow! Though Zane seemed like a grumpy player at first, he most definitely was nottttt; and I loved watching him open up more to Abby as he started to have feelings for her. They were an adorable/quirky couple for sure, one that I ship AND approve of. πŸ™ŒπŸ’—

this gif is so EXTRA and i LOVE it

Hey, guess what? I'm not sharing any highlights this time...

NOT!

“I like Abby,” I say, my voice low and dangerous. “I respect her. And if you respected her, you wouldn’t call her that or degrade her that way. I don’t want to hear it again.”

ZANEEEEEEE!!
πŸ“–

“Did you say something about coffee?”

“I think you said something about coffee. I already had my green tea.”

Note: πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

I loved how OUT OF IT Abby was that morning, lol.

πŸ“–

Hey, circulatory system: slow it down!
Respiratory system: in and out, nice and steady. That’s it. There we go. Breathe. Reproductive system: you have not been called to active duty. Stand down, soldier. I’m talking to you, ovaries.
Nervous system: stop being so … nervous.
Skeletal system: way to be solid. Carry on.

πŸ“–

“Gourmet pizza?” he asks.

“That depends. Do you like weird toppings?”

“Only if bacon is weird.”

“If bacon is weird, I don’t want to be normal.”

AHEM. I need this kind of relationship.

πŸ“–

Abby is charming, but utterly herself. Hilarious, a little irreverent, and completely alluring.

😍😍😍

πŸ“–

“Oh, before I forget,” Zoey says, “I gave Zane your number.”

“Zane?! You’re setting me up with Zane?!”

Though Zane is gorgeous with his dark blond hair and blue eyes I could drown in, he is exactly like Zoey. Except with the dial turned up to twenty.

I’m shocked, though I don’t hate the idea. I might have a teensy crush on her brother, but there is no way he feels the same. Plus, it’s a total party foul to harbor a secret crush on your best friend’s twin. Which is why I’ve never mentioned it.

Crush? What crush. I have no crush.

Soooooooo CASUAL.

πŸ“–

Zane: Am I to understand that you would be available? Thanks, Zane.

Note: But like, he sounds like the Zane from Ninjago lollllll

(I really hope someone understands that comparison)

πŸ“–

I don’t even know what all the words mean since I’m not the tech person, but there’s something sexy about the way Abby’s dropping lingo.

πŸ“–

Too bad I hate long hair, and mullets aren’t ever going to be in style.

Note: Unless you’re a Kpop idol πŸ‘€πŸ‘€

(I couldn't help myself, lol)

πŸ“–

Do men wear shoulder pads? I make a mental note to find an excuse to pat him down later and check. For research purposes.

πŸ“–

Now I wish I’d worn my headband with the unicorn horn, just so I could gloat that much more when I shatter his low opinion of me.

Note: Unicorn headbands for the winnnn

πŸ“–

“So, we’re good?” Jack asks. “Abby, you’ll come with me, and Zane, you can get another date?”

“Oh, Zane never has a problem getting dates,” I say.

Note: Oofffff, SHE SAID IT

πŸ“–

I manage not to murder Zane, though I do text Zoey to ask if she’d still be my friend if her brother mysteriously didn’t make it home from this weekend.

So far, she hasn’t responded.

πŸ“–

That blush, which I can’t help but find adorable on Zane’s otherwise chiseled face, appears once more. It shows me his human side. I can’t tell if he’s furious with me, impressed, or something else.

πŸ“–

My guess is that his irritation level has risen. I can imagine him pacing through the office, running his hand through his hair the way Zoey does when she’s mad. I like the mental image of him flustered, with perfectly mussed hair. I bite my lip, trying to shake that thought.

He's Zoey’s brother. Off-limits. No matter how hot he might look with ruffled hair and a scowl. Why is it that scowly guys are so hot? But I know why: Mr. Darcy. That Jane Austen created generations of women who want growly, grumpy men who are hiding a gooey, romantic center.

Instead of searching up Mr. Darcy gifs (which is where my brain wants to go), I send him a meme of the kitten clinging to a branch with the words “hang in there” emblazoned on it.

Note: Do we even blame her?

πŸ“–

He spins back to the window again, and I watch the tendons and muscles flexing in his neck. I shouldn’t be thinking about how hot Zane’s neck is when he’s upset, but anything is better than thinking about the fact that I just brought up something painful from his past. People might think that I march to the beat of my own drumline and all that, not caring what people think, but the truth is I do care. A lot.

πŸ‘€πŸ‘€πŸ‘€

Once again, I have even MORE highlights than just those...so maybe it's a sign (it's definitely a sign) that you should read the book for yourself!!!

As far as content goes: Any suggestive material/innuendos were pretty minor, so no worries there. No language that I can remember. Side characters did drink, I can't remember if the main characters did. There was no on-page sex, but it was talked about/implied between different characters , and innuendos. Abby was naked during one point of the book (not in a sexual way, it was meant to be humorous). However, there wasn't really any detailed description. Abby getting bullied in the past might be triggering for some (feel free to reach out to me if you'd like the specific details) but it wasn't triggering for me. Also, Zane experiences grief from his mom's death that happened from an accident when he was in high school. Again, that wasn't triggering for me, but it could be for others. I would describe the book as a mild "PG-13 romance movie."

Last but not least, I want to mention Abby's gal-pals! I love seeing fun friendships in stories, and it was so sweet to see how the girls supported/encouraged each other. I can't wait to read each of their books!

Also, all of my epilogue lovers! This book does have one, but it's more focused on tying in the next book (Zoey's book, which is perfectly fine). HOWEVER, there is a FREE bonus scene you can download (the link is at the end of the book) about Zane and Abby that has those epilogue vibes. Spoiler alert: IT'S CUTE.

The only thing I'll add to this very long review (sorry lol), is that you should read the book. Seriously. πŸ˜‰

City of Love by Gracie Ruth Mitchell - Book Review

My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Genres:

YA Fiction, YA Romance, YA Contemporary, Sweet Romance, NA Romance Contemporary Romance, NA Fiction Clean Romance

Blurb:

Lydia

I don’t have a diary; I have a pen pal—a Parisian girl named Noel who knows my deepest, darkest secrets. And now that I've finally graduated, it’s time to go meet her. Paris, here I come!
Except…something isn’t quite right in the City of Love. Because my first thought when I see Noel?
That’s not a girl.
Nope, apparently Noel is a guy.
That’s right: a guy. An attractive guy, with tattoos and green eyes that seem to see right through me.
Who is this, and what on earth is going on?

Noel

I know how it sounds, but I’m not a creep. I just thought Lydia knew I was a guy. By the time I realized she didn’t, she’d already started opening up about school and bullies and whatnot. She needed a friend. So, yes—I let her think I was a girl. And frankly, I would do it again. I can’t make myself regret being there for her.
But now Lydia is here in Paris, and I’m realizing that my feelings for her might be more than just friendly. I’ll have to do everything in my power not to fall for her completely, because she deserves way better than me.
Too bad that’s easier said than done...

PLEASE NOTE: This book deals with themes like bullying and (non-graphic) harassment--NOT between the love interests.

–––––––-–––––––––πŸ“––––––––-–––––––––

“I love love,” she says with a sigh, resting her head on my shoulder. I laugh softly, rubbing her back as we sway with the music. “I know you do,” I say.

Can I just say that I love Gracie's writing style? It's so fun, natural, and relatable as HECK! I fangirled so hard over Eye of the Beholder (book one of the Stone Springs Series), and I just KNEW that I'd adore this book as well! I remember loving Lydia in Mina and Cohen's book, and I really wanted her to get her own book–AND I'M SO GLAD IT HAPPENED!

πŸ‘ πŸ‘ πŸ‘

I love penpal romances, especiallyyyyy when they have mistaken identity elements thrown in there too! Oh, and a broody but sensitive guy...WHO'S FRENCH?! Um, yes PUH-LEASE! I want a Noel, y'all!! Also, their meet-cute (even though they technically knew each other already)? Adorableeee!!

i've been told that mabel is me...?

I think I've mentioned this in another review, but I think it's so fun/interesting when a book takes place in a different country...plus, I loveeeeee Paris lol. I'm that hopeless romantic who's never been but has wanted to go since I was like, eight! This book made me love Paris even more lolll. πŸ‘€πŸ˜

Are we doing that thing where I share my highlights? Obviously.

Luc takes a deep breath and then says, “I think you need to prepare yourself for the realization that you have feelings for Lydia.”

It takes me a second to register what he’s saying. Then I snort. “I don’t have feelings for her,” I say.

I can almost picture Luc shrugging as he says, “Maybe not romantic, or maybe not yet. But you’re extremely protective of this girl. I think you should prepare yourself emotionally for meeting her. Understand that you might be more attached to her than you realize.”

“I don’t have feelings for her,” I say again, my voice flat now. “And I’m not attached to her.”

But even as I say the words, they don’t quite ring true.

πŸ“–

I’m immediately greeted by the sight of Mr. Grump leaning against the wall next to the bathroom door, muscular arms folded over his chest, frown firmly in place. His somewhat rough exterior doesn’t detract from his handsomeness. He has thick, dark hair with just a bit of wave, or maybe curl, and I can see a bit of scruff starting to appear. I strangely even appreciate the tattoos I see—one of which crawls up the side of his neck from beneath his neckline, the others forming a barely visible sleeve above his left elbow. Normally tattoos aren’t my thing, but somehow on him they just seem extra masculine.
“Were you talking to yourself?” he says, and I pull my eyes away from his tattoos. He asks without any hint of emotion, leaving me guessing about whether he thinks I’m weird or just insane. I swallow. “Yes. I was giving myself a pep talk.” “Of course,” he says sardonically, nodding. His eyes leave mine and travel the length of my body before coming back to my gaze. “Did it work?”

πŸ“–

Lydia is sweet and fiery. She’s passionate and just. She’ll make some guy very happy someday.

πŸ“–

“Relax, Lydia.” Noel’s wry voice pulls me out of my thoughts. “You’ve got my arm in a death grip.” He’s right. Awkward. “Sorry,” I say, loosening my grip a little. “I was just stressing out.” “About the jewelry store?” he says, frowning over at me. “About holding your arm,” I confess. “Is that okay?” His frown is replaced by a new smile—how does he have so many? It’s not quite a smirk, but there’s sort of a Mona Lisa effect going on, like he’s smiling at a private joke. I could almost call it smug.
I would stress about this too lollll.

πŸ“–

I thought she would smell like me, but…it’s so much worse than that. She smells like us—the crisp scent of my shampoo mixed with the spicy sweetness of whatever cinnamon soap she uses. The primal caveman part of me stirs to life, telling me that this girl smells like us and therefore belongs to us. I put that caveman back in his cage and tell him to calm the heck down.

πŸ“–

Then I look back to Lydia, my gaze trailing over her flannel pajamas. “I like the llamas,” I say, smiling a little. “Oh,” she says, a faint blush rising to her cheeks as she looks down. “I know they’re sort of silly.” I shake my head. “They’re…cute.” The word feels experimental on my tongue; I don’t usually describe things that way, but it fits here. Lydia scratches her head, further mussing her hair, and in this state she somehow exudes the same sort of sweetness and innocence that I would expect from someone much younger. Something in me softens as an odd pang of protectiveness tugs at my chest—a desire to see her fed and clothed and safe and happy. I rub the back of my neck, trying to figure out where this instinct is coming from, before I realize that it’s because I worry about having her so close to my less-than-legal endeavors.

ALL. OF. THIS.

πŸ“–

“Calming people down helps me calm down. ”
I can see myself saying the same thing, tbh.

πŸ“–

He could be a serial killer. Or, more disturbing, one of those people who doesn’t like chocolate. No way am I dating a serial killer who doesn’t like chocolate.

πŸ“–

Noel has changed into a sensible t-shirt and flannel pants, and I try not to feel embarrassed by my llama pajamas.

Note: YASSSS FOR LLAMA PJS

πŸ“–

My brain chooses this moment to conjure the unhelpful image of the way the neck of Lydia’s shirt tugged down over her shoulder, of the way her dark lashes fanned over her high cheekbones. Why was she so appealing? Why did the sight of her pull at something deep within me?

Oh my goodnesssss

πŸ“–

“All right,” she says. “Let’s make a plan. What should we do about Marcus? He wants to talk tomorrow.” “Yeah, that won’t be happening,” I say before I can stop myself. Lydia raises one brow at me. “What?” I say. “Don’t look at me like that. Do you want to talk to him?”

I just...I love the dynamic between them!

“The guard dog stays,” Noel says from behind me. His voice is silky and dangerous, soft but commanding. It sends shivers down my spine.

HECK YES, HE STAYS!

I take one last deep breath, willing myself calm, before glancing back to Lydia. But when I see her, arms wrapped around herself, face flickering with fear and anger, another wave of hot fury rushes over me.

“She smells like cinnamon.” The words fly from my mouth before I can stop them. I give myself an internal kick, because I know how Luc will respond to this.

“Believe me, I don’t trust you either,” I say.

“Well, I don’t know you,” she says defensively.

“Do you want to go back out there?” I say, gesturing to the door. “Be my guest.”

The girl gives a little snort, and for just a second, a spark of amusement flashes in her eyes.

“What?” I say, feeling defensive.

“You said ‘be my guest,’” she says. “Like in Beauty and the Beast.”

I just stare at her

“It takes place in France?” she says, looking expectant. “And we’re in France? And there are some similarities between the plot of that movie and our current—“ But she breaks off, shaking her head. “Oh, never mind. Forget I said anything.”

Note: Why am I her lolllll?? πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

As far as content goes: I honestly don't remember any language whatsoever. The biggest content warning would be Marcus, Lydia's classmate who acts/talks (stalking/bullying) in a totally inappropriate manner (the details aren't very descriptive, but you definitely get the idea). This whole situation wasn't triggering for me, but it could be for other readers...just know that it DOES get resolved. Noel's "charity work" (think Robin Hood/Aladdin πŸ˜‰) played a big part in the story. Drugs, guns, and knives are mentioned (but none of them are actually used). Lydia did end up getting a little drunk, but since she was in Paris...it wasn't technically illegal. I'm not sure if there was anything else, lol. Overall, I would still call the book a clean read!!

I've decided that Gracie Ruth Mitchell is one of my favorite authors, y'all. This is the third book I've read from her and it will NOT be my last. I know I can always expect quirky characters, great tropes, and SWOONYYYY KISSES!!

I truly didn't want the story to end, BUT...there was an epilogue, and that helped a lottttt. ANDDDDD I think I know who book three will be about, so I am very excited for that!

Closing thought? This book better be on your TBR! πŸ’—πŸ™Œ
